Swiss Music Export at the Reeperbahn Festival 20 – 23 September 2017, Hamburg

Autumn time is Reeperbahn Festival time for anyone who really cares about what’s happening at the cutting edge of music in Europe. Needless to say, Swiss Music Export will make its presence felt in Hamburg as loudly as ever with a variety of showcase performances and networking events.

Always musically exciting, the Reeperbahn Festival is not just one of the most useful but also one of the most enjoyable festivals in our calendar. The programme of events and panel discussions is wide-ranging and forward-looking. This year, more than 800 events will take place in seventy venues, attracting 37’000 music fans and business professionals from all over the continent. There will be no fewer than 500 concerts as well as 260 conference and fifty art events.

It is a considerable source of pride for us here at Swiss Music Export that we were amongst the very first organisations which sensed the importance of the nascent festival when it was first held in 2006. Eleven years later, we’re still there, enthusiastic as ever. Once again, we have lined up an irresistible – we think! – selection of networking events and showcases.

What’s more, Swiss music business professionals will be able to purchase their delegate pass at a discount price of € 160.00 (plus VAT, plus systems fee) from Swiss Music Export!

Swiss Business Mixer
Friday 22 September 2017 – 14:00 – 18:00
Sommersalon im Klubhaus St. Paul, Spielbudenplatz 22, Hamburg

The Sommersalon also provides the picturesque background for the traditional Swiss Business Mixer, a sumptuous smorgasbord of Swiss live music, cheese raclette, and white wine. This is a joint presentation by Swiss Music Export, Fondation Suisa, RFV Basel, and the Swiss Embassy Berlin.

Once again, attendance is open to any festival delegates. However, anyone wishing to attend needs to register before 18:00 on Tuesday, 19 September.

And these are the acts lined-up to serenade our guests:

14:30 – 15:00 Damian Lynn
15:45 – 16:15 Veronica Fusaro
17:00 – 17:30 One Sentence. Supervisor

Damian Lynn
Super catchy and yet thoughtful pop songs are Damian Lynn’s forte. Damian walked away with the “Best Talent” award at the Swiss Music Awards 2016.

Veronica Fusaro
The promising young singer/songwriter has come along in leaps and bounds over the past year. Expect a cracking debut album soon.

One Sentence. Supervisor
The second album from post-psychedelic/krautrock outfit One Sentence. Supervisor, “Temporär Musik 1 – 13”, was IndieSuisse’s “Album of the Year 2016”. Despite the historic references and the narcotic sound, this band’s music is fresh as a daisy.

Swiss Night im Sommersalon
Friday 22 September 2017 – 19:00 – 01:00
Sommersalon im Klubhaus St. Paul, Spielbudenplatz 22, Hamburg

Following on from last year’s great success, Swiss Music Export in conjunction with RFV Basel and Stadt Zürich Kultur is once again hosting an action-packed Swiss Music Night at the Sommersalon.

Entry to the Swiss Night im Sommersalon is free. The same entry conditions apply as for all other public concerts at the festival.

LIVE
19:15 – 19:55 Egopusher
20:30 – 21:10 Debrah Scarlett
21:45 – 22:25 The Weyers
23:00 – 23:40 Crimer
00:15 – 01:00 Audio Dope

Egopusher
On paper, Tobias Preisig (violin/bass synth) and Alessandro Giannelli (drums, snyth) make for an unlikely duo. It turns out, however, that the unconventional combination of instruments works a treat. Egopusher are an extraordinarily dynamic and innovative act. Truly one not to be missed.

Debrah Scarlett
Flame-haired Debrah Scarlett is a pianist, singer and songwriter whose music has been described by The Line of Best Fit as “uplifting transcendental pop with hints of Daughter, Birdy and Florence Welch.” And who would we be to disagree!

The Weyers
Brothers Adi and Luke Weyermann are veterans of the Zurich music scene. Both have been in a number of bands which have achieved more than just local popularity. The brilliant Weyers is their first joint venture. Adi (vox, guitar) is a Brit-pop fan and a consummate songwriter in the Kinks-mode, Luke adds hardcore punk muscle on the drums.

Crimer
Crimer was all over the Swiss media earlier this year. The reason for this was a debut track, ”Brotherlove”, which has so far notched up well over 140’000 youtube clicks. An EP, “Preach”, confirmed the first impression that Crimer has a unique take on synth pop with an 80s touch. Just don’t mention the dancing…

Audio Dope
Audio Dope has come a long way since his straight-forward early hip-hop beats. Mixing all kinds of synths with samples and fragments of organic music making, he has arrived at a sound that manages to be both rhythmic and ambient at the same time.

Other Swiss acts in the Reeperbahn programme

Some more Swiss acts – one who doesn’t make music, unfortunately – are included in the main Reeperbahn programme, Faber, Zeal & Ardor, The Gardener & The Tree and Michael Massmünster.

Faber
Wednesday 20.09.2017 – 23:10 – Docks
The line-up of Faber’s band is unusual, containing a drumming trombonist. His rasping voice, too, makes a welcome change from the usual, softly-softly singer-songwriter fare. Faber’s real speciality, however, are his sharp lyrics, full of unexpected turns and conclusions.

Zeal & Ardor
Thursday 21.09.2017 – 20:00 – Knust
Basel-based Swiss-American multi-instrumentalist and singer Manuel Gagneux aka Zeal & Ardor combines the euphoric sound of African-American gospel with the blues of chain-gang songs and the dark wall of guitar that is death metal to devastating effect.

The Gardener & The Tree
Saturday 23.09.17 – 19:30 – Häkken
The Gardener & The Tree’s EP «Mossbo», set to be released in Autumn, will be accompanied by electrifying guitar riffs, explosive drum beats and musical intricacies to create a raw, emotional mood that sets the listener free.

Michel Massmünster – The Promise of the Night (Pop Lecture / Word)
Friday 22.09.2017 – 18:00 – Millerntorwache
Massmünster is a sociologist – more accurately: a sociologist of the night. He will be reading from his book “Im Taumel der Nacht” which was published in February 2017. Using his hometown of Basel as an example, it explores the meaning of night in modern pop culture.

Deepdive music Showcase @ headCRASH
Saturday 23 September 2017 – 19:00
headCrash, Hamburg

As in previous years, deepdive music – an agency, management and publishing company, and record label formed in 1999 – are presenting their own showcase night. It features the following acts:

19:30 Lynn Maring
Lynn Maring is one of the two human volcanoes behind The Chikitas, already a successful Swiss rock export. Solo, she explores the bluesy side of her furious muse.

20:45 Veronica Fusaro
The promising young singer/songwriter has come along in leaps and bounds over the past year. Expect a cracking debut album soon.

22:00 The Souls
A dramatic six-piece rock outfit with a light melodic touch and – occasionally – a banjo. Their debut album was produced in LA by Greg Collins.

23:15 Polar Circles
Polar Circles are a rock quartet from Lausanne who are fond of big choruses and sumptuous guitar sounds. They have recently recorded their second album with producer Sam Williams (Supergrass, Plan B, Noisettes, etc.).
